When should you see your doctor? As soon as you notice anything suspicious on your skin, it’s wise to make an appointment with your doctor. Even if you’ve had a mole for years that suddenly changes, it’s a good idea to have it checked. It’s also possible that a spot suddenly starts bleeding, itching, or becomes tender. These are all signs that should be taken seriously. The doctor will examine the spot and determine whether further examination is necessary. If so, you’ll be referred to a dermatologist. Sometimes a small piece of skin is removed (a biopsy) to determine whether it’s melanoma. This is done under local anesthesia. Skin cancer treatment: If melanoma is suspected, the spot is usually completely removed with a minor surgical procedure. If the melanoma is detected early, this treatment is often sufficient.
