“There are clear signs of sepsis,” said Dr. Hale. “She needs intravenous antibiotics and imaging tests to rule out internal trauma. We are admitting her to the hospital.”
Julian swallowed hard. “Is it serious?” “It’s serious, but treatable… because you brought her in right away.” The doctor examined Lily’s arms and noticed bruises shaped like fingers. “Do you remember these?” he asked. Lily nodded slightly. “That’s when she grabbed me and pushed me.”
Dr. Hale took clinical photographs and went out into the hallway with Julian. “Mr. Cross, I am legally obligated to report this to child protective services. This injury should have been examined several days ago. Covering it up with dirty bandages is gross negligence.” Julian felt anger, but also relief that a healthcare professional was acknowledging the horror of the situation. “Do what you have to do. Save her.”
While Lily was having an ultrasound, Julian called 911 and asked an operator to write a report. Shortly after, Detective Reed and Officer Grant arrived. Julian told them everything: the trip to Tokyo, Eleanor’s sudden departure, the bandages, the fever.
